In my Box

I’ve personally always been wary of the title of “woman leader”. Growing up I saw many women leaders in the media being portrayed as b****es and undesirable. In all the leadership positions I’ve held I always made sure to come across as friendly and agreeable. I didn’t want to be seen as a controlling shrew. But I do what I need to when the time calls for it, but in those moments despite me being normally soft-spoken and caring,  I was written off as emotional and bossy by my peers. Even though I was doing the common role of enforcer that a leader sometimes has to get things done. Even now in leadership positions, I strive to be agreeable, even when I shouldn’t be, in order to keep the peace. I understand that I play into  traditionally feminine role as a leader, but it’s probably because I  do not like to be seen as unfeminine. So I don’t really like the idea of a boundary pushing woman leader, I guess I like staying in my box. And I’ll admit the concept as being seen as modern proudly “bossy”, glass ceiling shattering woman leader gives me a bad vibe; mainly just the lack of acceptance for those who break out. I think it’s great that they can do it, but for me, I think I’ll stay in my gendered box for now. Unfortunately, I’m comfortable here.
